First Annual Clatskanie Farmers Market Garlic Festival!

First Annual Clatskanie Farmers Market Garlic Festival
By Steven Routon

I have always have been interested in elixirs. The very word pricks my interest. Garlic may well be one. My holistic health friends, and at least some scientific research, suggest that garlic is a potent antibiotic, fights off or cures colds, resists the onset of cancers, and may even fend off our “vampires”. While I can’t speak empirically to most of those claims, I will say unequivocally that it warms my very soul. Forty clove chicken is my favorite dish and a head of garlic brushed with olive oil and grilled soft, renders the individual cloves exquisite. Spread it on toasted artisan bread and you have it all going on. If sweet is your vice, take one of the darkened, caramelized nuggets from the skillet in which you have prepared the aforementioned forty clove dish, pop it in your mouth and experience one of the reasons I have become a grower of this delightful, edible bulb.

But, I digress. This Saturday, August 22nd, is the first annual Clatskanie Farmers Market Garlic Festival. The grille will be fired up at 10:00AM. The fresh artisan bread (you may remember it from the Community Booth last year) will be sliced, the garlic grilled and ready for spreading soon thereafter. We will be offering samples all day long, each one served by the vendor who grew it who is sure to rhapsodize about the ample delights of each.

So, join your neighbors this Saturday, 10:00AM – 2:00PM for what is sure to be an absolutely blissful culinary event…and rest assured, during that precious window of time, you need not fear sight of any vampires!
