This Saturday, June 27th, Clatskanie Farmers’ Market welcomes cooks of all levels and ages to take part in a Kale Cook-Off. Entries will be accepted between 12-12:30pm, with judging to take place at 1pm in Cope’s Park. Contestants should bring a kale dish, ready to eat, in a quantity large enough for three judges plus taste testing for a “People’s Choice” award. Complimentary fresh picked kale will be available at the Market on the morning of the 27th and there is no fee to enter.
Each contestant may enter up to two dishes, which will be judged on appearance, taste, texture, “kaleness,” and presentation. Dishes should be kept at a food safe temperature until judging– limited electricity will be available; please bring propane burners and coolers as needed, along with two copies of your recipe. Winning recipes will be posted on the CFM website. Any questions may be directed to Lynn Green at 503-728-4723.
The Clatskanie Farmers’ Market is now well underway! The warm weather has resulted in an excellent variety of early produce, including lettuce, beets, potatoes, kale, peas, garlic scapes and even some beans, cukes, zucchinis and local raw honey. Be sure to stop by and check out the offerings at the Community Booth, Barefoot Farm and Flowers, Backroads Bounty, EverAtlas Farm, and Misty Meadow Truck Farm. Quincy Greenhouse will also be at the Market for a couple more weeks with bedding flowers and amazing hanging baskets, and several of our vendors have veggie starts for those who are still planting gardens.
This week, look for the addition of some fantastic wood crafts by Bill Eaton, who will be on hand with planting barrels, compost tumblers, pantry organizers and wooden toys. The Ukelele Ladies will be providing live music, Market Fresh will be serving up delicious breakfast and lunch fare, and Klahowya Nika Tillicum will be making kites with the kids. We’ll see you there!
The 2015 Season is underway! Thank you so very much to all of our supporters who attended our 2nd Annual Fundraiser BBQ in the Park. We raised nearly $700 again this year! Those much needed funds will be used to further promote the Market through advertising, education and outreach. We had a brief Opening Day Ceremony on June 6th, and celebrated Fruit & Vegetable Week on June 13th with a Produce Scavenger Hunt… and Yummy Shortcake for Prizes! That was so much fun that we plan to do it again during the season! Upcoming events include shopping for Father’s Day gifts on June 20th, a Kale Cook-Off with Judges & Prizes on June 27th, and special Market hours from Noon-4pm on July 4th. We’ll see you at the Market!
